SSAT 란?
SSAT(The Secondary
School Admission Test)는 미국 사립 초중고 입학 시험으로, 대부분의 유명 사립 학교들이 학생 선발 시에 SSAT 성적을 요구하고 있다. 학생의 학업 성취도를 평가하는 내신(GPA)과는 달리 SSAT는 응시자가 학교에 입학하여 학업을 해나가는 데 필요한 능력을 갖추고 있는지 평가하는 시험이기 때문에 학생이 가지고 있는 학문적 잠재력을 판단하는 기준이 된다. SSAT 공식 사이트는 www.ssat.org
SSAT 구성
Middle Level Test / Upper Level Test
Writing Sample이 첫 섹션으로 나온 후 Quantitative 25문항, Reading Comprehension, Verbal, Quantitative 25문항 순서로 시험이 진행된다. 중간 중간 각 5분, 10분씩 총 15분의 휴식 시간이 주어지며, 시험을 치르는 데는 총 185분이 소요된다.

Writing Sample(논술)
제시된 주제에 대하여 작문을 하게 되며, SSAT 점수에는 반영되지 않지만 응시자의 지원 학교에 성적이 전달될 때 writing sample copy도 함께 전달된다. 2012년 10월 SSAT가 바뀌면서 writing sample의 prompt는 아래 두 가지로 나뉘게 되었다.
- Creative Prompts : 제시된 주제로부터 연상되는 내용을 자유롭게 써나가는 형식으로, 예를 들어 '교실은 비어있었다'라는 주제가 제시되면 이 문장에서 연상되는 바를 바탕으로 창의적인 글을 쓰면 된다.
- Essay Prompts : 제시된 주제를 지지하거나 반박하는 글을 쓰는 형식으로, 개인적인 경험이나 역사, 문학 등에서 구체적인 예를 찾아 자신의 의견을 뒷받침해야 한다.
Reading Comprehension(독해)
제시된 지문을 읽고 글의 주제나 문맥을 파악하는 문제, 추론을 끌어내는 문제 등을 통해 응시자가 지문 내용을 정확하게 이해하고 있는지를 평가한다.
Quantitative(수학)
사칙연산과 백분율, 소수 및 정수, 양수와 음수, 비율, 그래프 등의 문제로 학교에서 배웠거나 일상 생활에서 유용한 수학 계산 문제들이 출제된다.
Verbal(영어)
제시어와 의미가 같은 단어를 보기에서 찾는 동의어(synonym) 문제와 단어들 사이의 관계를 파악하는 능력을 측정하는 유추(analogy) 문제로 구성된다.

SSAT 채점제도
Middle Level Test
/ Upper Level Test에는 감점 제도가 적용되어 답을 쓰지 않으면 0점, 답을 썼다가 틀리면 -0.25점이 된다. 이는 수험생이 전혀 모르는 문제에 적당히 채워 넣는 식으로 답하는 것을 막기 위해 마련된 제도지만, 답을 '찍기'로 선택하는 것이 절대적으로 불리하다고 볼 수는 없다. 보기가 5개인 객관식 문항의 경우 전혀 모르는 상태에서 답을 찍으면 정답을 맞출 가능성이 20%에 불과하므로 이 때는 답란을 빈칸으로 남겨두는 것이 현명하다. 하지만 확실히 정답이 아닌 보기를 두 개 또는 세 개 정도 제외할 수 있다면 정답을 맞출 가능성이 33% ~ 50%로 높아지므로 이 때는 정답에 가깝다고 생각되는 것을 추측하여 답하는 것이 더 나은 선택이 될 수 있다.
